چکیده

Type specimens are the cornerstones of modern taxonomy and systematics, should be starting point any study diversity, especially considering increasing ability to sample them genetically. However, no compilation type material (beyond holotypes) exists for turtles (Order Testudines). This is first attempt locate compile a list all (holotypes, paratypes, syntypes, lectotypes, neotypes, etc.) described turtles, whether currently recognized or synonymized. A total 1222 named taxa included here (including synonyms), but only 875 (71.6%) have at least one identified specimen (excluding neotypes iconotypes). Part series another 102 considered lost. represents 45-year search effort, although still incomplete, benefit current future turtle systematicists, as well direct ongoing efforts missing.

Disentangling the Pelomedusa complex using type specimens and historical DNA (Testudines: Pelomedusidae).

Recent research has shown that the helmeted terrapin (Pelomedusa subrufa), a species that occurs throughout sub-Saharan Africa, in Madagascar and the southwestern Arabian Peninsula, consists of several deeply divergent genetic lineages. Here we examine all nominal taxa currently synonymized with Pelomedusa subrufa (Bonnaterre, 1789) and provide mitochondrial DNA sequences of type specimens or t...
